When something unexpected happens with your electrics, having a local electrician you can call can make life a lot easier.
At MES Electrical Services, smaller electrical jobs can often cost around £100–£300, depending on what’s involved. We recently helped homeowners on Dewfalls Drive after they discovered a problem with a new light fitting they’d bought online. Luckily, we were working just up the road and could pop in within the hour to take a look.
Why choose a local electrician?
Let’s be honest, when you’ve got an electrical problem, you want it sorted without having to wait days for someone to travel across the area. That’s one of the big advantages of using a local electrician. If we’re already working nearby, we can often get to you much quicker, which can be particularly helpful when you’ve got something you’re not comfortable leaving as it is. That’s exactly what happened on Dewfalls Drive.
The homeowners live in a three-bedroom detached house built in the 1990s and were simply updating some of their light fittings. They’d taken the old fitting down and were ready to install the new one when they noticed that the connections weren’t the same. The new light was metal and didn’t have an earth wire, which immediately raised a concern. After taking a closer look, we found that the fitting they’d bought from Amazon wasn’t suitable for use in a UK installation and wouldn’t have been safe to fit.
What should you do if a new light doesn’t fit?
This is where it’s really important not to try and make an electrical fitting work just because you’ve already bought it. If something doesn’t look right or the connections don’t match what you’ve got in your home, stop and get it checked. In this case, the safest option was to put the original light fitting back up rather than trying to alter the wiring or install something that wasn’t suitable.
Because we were working just up the road, the homeowners gave us a call and we were able to pop in within around an hour. We put the original fitting back safely and explained what they’d need to do next. A couple of days later, once they’d got a suitable replacement, we returned and installed the new light properly.
Electrician in Bradley Stoke – why local really helps
The Dewfalls Drive job is a good example of how useful it can be to have an electrician nearby. It wasn’t a huge electrical project and the homeowners didn’t need a complete rewire or anything particularly complicated. They simply needed someone to take a look at a light fitting they weren’t confident installing themselves.
Being local meant we could respond quickly, make sure everything was safe and then return a few days later to finish the job. It’s exactly the sort of situation where having someone nearby can take a lot of the stress out of a relatively small problem.
A local electrician can also be useful for all those smaller jobs that tend to get added to the list over time. Perhaps you’ve got a light that needs replacing, a socket that’s become loose, a switch you’d like changed or an outdoor light that isn’t working properly. You don’t necessarily need a huge project to give us a call.
What should you check when buying electrical fittings?
If you’re buying lights or other electrical accessories online, take a few minutes to check that they’re suitable for use in the UK. If you’re unsure, it’s always better to ask an electrician before removing your existing fitting or attempting to install the new one.
The homeowners on Dewfalls Drive were lucky that they spotted the problem before fitting the new light. It meant we could put the original fitting back, find a suitable replacement and get everything installed safely without turning a simple light upgrade into a much bigger problem.
